Crewe and Nantwich Liberal Democrats Tribute to Gwyneth Dunwoody

1.28.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 18th Apr 2008

Local Liberal Democrats have joined in paying tribute to veteran MP Gwyneth Dunwoody, who died on Thursday.

Borough Council Group leader Cllr Gwyn Griffiths recalled his 34 year association with Mrs Dunwoody and paid tribute to her commitment to her role. He said:

"I first met Mrs Dunwoody in 1974, and in 1992 contested the General Election against her. Although we had different political views I always found her easy to work with, and very committed to her cause.

"She was widely respected both as a constituency MP, and as a specialist in transport issues.

"Her independence of views, and straight-talking manner, didn't always endear her to the party bosses but marked her out as a special type of politician."

"Our condolences go to her family and extensive circle of friends."
