Crewe called for May 22nd10.56.14am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 3rd May 2008
May 22nd has been named as polling day for the parliamentary by-election in Crewe and Nantwich. The Liberal Democrats have announced their choice of Elizabeth Shenton to win the seat previously represented by Gwyneth Dunwoody. Elizabeth was chosen by local members to fight the by-election and is a nearby councillor. She featured in a BBC "You can make the difference" programme, which said that "she had made a real difference to people's lives". You can keep in touch with her campaign via www.elizabethshenton.com "We will fight this by-election with all the vigour that has gained us previous by-election successes", says Campaigns Director Hilary Stephenson. "Labour are clearly frightened by the capacity of the Liberal Democrats to campaign effectively in contests such as this." Nick Clegg will be in Crewe next week and is writing to every household in the constituency. Thank you leaflets following the local elections are being delivered this weekend and a campaign HQ close to Crewe railway station has been opened. Chief Executive Chris Rennard says that it is one of the best by-election HQs that we have ever had and that help is critically needed in the early stages.
