About Crewe and NantwichCheshire East Council / Unitary AuthorityCheshire East Council will bring together the boroughs of Macclesfield, Congleton and Crewe & Nantwich, and Cheshire County Council. It will take over local government services including highways, education, social services and refuse collections on April 1, 2009. The new Council will be the third largest unitary authority in the North West, covering a population of 358,900. In May 2008, there were "all-out" elections for all wards based on the existing County Council electoral divisions. There were three councillors elected for each of the 27 wards in Cheshire East, making 81 Councillors in total. The electoral wards from Crewe and Nantwich are Cholmondley, Crewe East, Crewe North, Crewe South, Crewe West, Doddington, Nantwich and Rope. The next elections are then due to take place in May 2011. From May 2008 until April 2009, the Council will act as a "Shadow" Council making preparations for the new Council coming into existence. On 1st May, two Liberal Democrat candidates David Cannon and Betty Howell topped the poll in Crewe South, and were therefore elected to the new East Cheshire Council. Crewe and Nantwich Parliamentary Constituency
At the 2005 General Election the Liberal Democrats increased our vote by over 5% - the largest increase of any Party. The boundaries of the constituency are not contiguous with the local government district of Crewe and Nantwich, in particular omitting much of the rural area west of Nantwich, and parts of the north of the town of Crewe around Leighton Hospital, which are in the Eddisbury constituency.
